Candle-type filter elements may seem like just a "candle", but once the pore size distribution is misaligned or the fatigue life is shortened, the entire production line will come to a halt due to substandard filtrate. If B2B procurement only focuses on the parameter of "filtration accuracy", it is often discovered during on-site debugging that the flow rate attenuation is twice as fast as expected, and the reverse blowing and re-production cycle has dropped from 8 hours to 3 hours. The following ten questions are the "pitfall avoidance list" verified on-site over the past six years. Asking them before placing an order is safer than any verbal promise.

1. Aperture distribution: The average value does not equal the true interception point
For a filter element with a nominal size of 5 µm, if the D90 reaches 8 µm, it means that 10% of the particles will directly pass through the filter. Ask the supplier to provide the capillary flow pore size curve (CFP) to see if the three points D10, D50, and D90 are concentrated. The narrower the distribution, the steeper the β value (particle interception ratio) curve, and the more stable the subsequent batches will be.

2. The seesaw of porosity and flux
High porosity brings large flux but sacrifices mechanical strength. For compressible filter cakes such as yeast and diatomite, a porosity of 75-78% is recommended. If it is a low-solid-content liquid, reducing the porosity to 70% in exchange for a longer back-blowing cycle can actually lower the total cost of ownership.

3. The way fibers are combined determines the risk of flaking
For the same PP material, hot melt bonding has one less chemical residue than latex impregnation and also avoids the formation of "secondary particles" after the adhesive is washed away. Cut a small piece of the filter element and ultrasonicate it in 80 ℃ hot water for 10 minutes. If floating fibers appear on the water surface, it can be determined that the tendency of shedding is high.

4. The "knee point" of the pressure differential-flow curve
Don't just look at the nominal initial pressure difference of 0.1 MPa. You need to obtain the curves of the blockage stages at 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%. The earlier the knee point appears, the smaller the deep slag holding space is. For 24-hour continuous operation, choosing a model with a knee point of ≥ 0.25MPa can extend the service life by 30%.

5. Back-blowing fatigue: Differences between metal caps and plastic caps
The PP end cover is prone to circumferential cracks after 500 pulses at 6 bar. Aluminum end caps can withstand over 3,000 times, but the cost increases by 15%. If the system blows back six times a day, 2,000 times a year, the metal cap will be more stable. Conversely, for low frequencies, plastic caps can be selected for weight reduction.

6. Chemical compatibility: Extreme tests for pH 1 and pH 13
PTFE coating can resist strong acids and alkalis, but if PET is used as the base material non-woven fabric, it will hydrolyze and become brittle when the pH is greater than 11. Soak the entire filter element in the target liquid at 40 ℃ for 72 hours, then take it out and test the tensile residual strength. Only when it maintains ≥90% can it be considered qualified.

7. Temperature reduction coefficient
The melting point of PP is 165 ℃, but its long-term temperature resistance is only 60 ℃. If you want to use it in 80 ℃ hot water, you need to choose modified PES or nylon 66. Ask the supplier to provide the aging curve at 80 ℃ for 1000 hours to see if the decrease in elongation at break is less than 20%.

8. The length tolerance of the filter element fits with the groove of the O-ring
If the lengths of two 30-inch filter elements differ by 2 mm, it will cause bypass at the end face and direct short circuit of the particles. The full-length tolerance is required to be ± 0.5mm, and A silicone O-ring with a hardness of 70 Shore A and a compression set of less than 15% is provided.

9. Wetting integrity test: Bubble Point or Diffusion Flow?
The 0.22 µm sterilizing grade filter element commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry must undergo bacterial challenge (ASTM F838), with a challenge level of 10⁷ CFU/cm². Only when the downstream is sterile can it be considered qualified. Food-grade products can be simplified by the bubble point method, but a correlation table should be made between the smallest bubble points and the corresponding hole diameters so that on-site spot checks can immediately determine whether there is any damage.

10. Batch traceability code: Write the quality guarantee into the laser code
High-quality manufacturers will laser-engrave the batch number and serial number on each filter element, and bind them to the filter material roll number, welding parameters, and test report. In case of quality anomalies, the machine and raw material rolls can be located within 30 minutes instead of being sealed in batches.

15-minute on-site quick test checklist
When collecting loans, randomly select 3 loans and do 3 things for each:
Measure the bubble point and record the minimum value;
Weigh and calculate whether the porosity falls within ±2% of the nominal value.
Strike the end cover with a 1 kg steel ball from a height of 50 cm to see if it cracks.
If all pass the re-entry into the database, the complaint rate in the later stage can be reduced to within 1%.

The purchase of candle filter elements is not about buying a "filter cloth wrapped iron pipe", but about choosing a deep filtration system that is predictable, traceable and repeatable. Writing the above ten questions into the RFQ and having the supplier reply with data one by one can better ensure the stability of the process than any slogan of "ultra-long service life".
